How To View Spartanburg County Arrest Records, Mugshots & the Reason for Detainment

The South Carolina Freedom of Information Act ensures transparency and public access to government records.1 Under this state law and the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), public records pertaining to arrests can be found in several ways, depending on the arresting agency and where the subject is being held.2

When trying to find someone’s mugshot or simply find out if someone is in jail, searchers will find it beneficial to know the arrestee’s full name and approximately where and when the arrest occurred.

Spartanburg County arrest records can conveniently be found through the sheriff’s office website as they offer many helpful search tools. Each of the online arrest logs for inmates in the Spartanburg County Detention Center–the county jail–are listed below:

Access South Carolina Vital Records Relating to Marriage & Divorce

In addition to the local options, public divorce records or marriage documents are accessible online via VitalChek, an independent service endorsed by the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC).

Marriage records dating from July 1950 to December 2022 and death records ranging from July 1962 and December 2022 can be purchased through VitalChek if the requester fits these criteria:

  • The requester is one of the parties in the marriage or divorce (husband/wife/divorcee)
  • The requester is an adult child of the married or divorced couple
  • The requester is a previous or current spouse of the married/divorced party
  • The requester is a legal representative of someone listed on the record

VitalChek records pertaining to both divorce and marriage can be ordered online, by phone, or by mail for varying fees. Although requesters who do not fit the above criteria will not be granted a certified or complete record, VitalChek will offer a statement that the marriage or divorce did happen, along with the name of the county where the license or certificate was issued and the date that the event occurred.

For questions about costs or the process of obtaining vital records through this service, individuals can call VitalChek at +1.800.284.1008.

Members of the public seeking marriage and divorce records outside of VitalChek’s date range are advised to request these documents from the probate court where the original marriage license or divorce decree was granted.

Individuals seeking marriage or divorce records in Spartanburg County could even opt for utilizing a third-party platform, as these services are not limited to a county or even state search and can instead do a broader review at the national level, check for aliases, and access online information that may not be readily available through free public record searches.

Lastly–for marriage records dating back to before these agencies and courts documented them–searchers could check with local churches near where the marriage ceremony was held as churches often kept marriage records before online repositories existed. Church records regarding marriage or divorce could even be used to trace genealogy or learn more about one’s family tree.

If marital records are needed for events that occurred in neighboring counties, individuals are welcome to review our resource on locating public records in South Carolina for free; here, citizens can find reliable methods of looking up not only marriage and divorce certificates, but also statewide public information on arrests, court cases, criminal reports, and more.

How Can I Find South Carolina Criminal Records Through State Resources?

South Carolina criminal records are most reliably obtained at the state level, as these will be official and in depth criminal records.7

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) serves as the state’s criminal record repository.8 The SLED provides members of the public two options to look up someone’s criminal record: the online State Law Enforcement Division: Citizens Access to Criminal Histories (SLED CATCH) or an application submitted by mail.9

Online

  1. Fill out the electronic SLED CATCH criminal history check form (subject’s first name, last name, date of birth and gender must be entered; maiden name and social security number are optional search criteria but will help narrow down the search to ensure the correct record is retrieved)9
  2. Enter credit card information and submit the $26 payment ($25 criminal record fee plus a $1 credit card processing fee)
  3. Submit the payment
  4. Review the online criminal record and print a copy for your records
A screenshot of the SLED Citizens Access to Criminal Histories (CATCH), an online platform where one can do a criminal history check that can be searched by providing the person's first and last name, DOB, and gender, which are the required information and the maiden name as well as SSN which are optional.

By Mail

Name-based criminal history records may also be requested from SLED by postal mail. The $1 convenience fee does not apply to mail-in requests, so the criminal record check fee is $25 and payable by certified check, business check, cashier’s check, or money order made out to the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division.

Applicants must submit the SLED Criminal Record Check Application, $25 payment via accepted payment method, and a self-addressed and stamped envelope to:11

South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division
Records Department
PO Box 21398
Columbia, South Carolina 29221-1398

If a notarized or certified record is needed, the applicant must make note of that on the application. Questions about a record can be directed to the SLED Public Dissemination Unit by phone at (803)-896-1443. Applicants who run into technical issues may call the SLED help desk at (803)-896-1443 or email [email protected].

Criminal records obtained from SLED will not include sex crimes or warrants, but instructions for finding information on both of these is explained below

South Carolina criminal history information may also be requested via the following agencies at the state or federal levels:

How To Conduct a Background Check in Spartanburg County, South Carolina

In South Carolina, background checks can be conducted for either personal or professional reasons as each has its own purpose and intricacies.

Personal background checks can be done on anyone from a family member to a colleague or even a potential date, while professional checks are used regarding screening for employment, housing, licensing, adoption, or even purchasing firearms.

Some of the features and differences between personal and professional background checks are described briefly below, along with how to perform each in Spartanburg County:

Personal Background Checks

  • Can help give insight on the subject’s criminal, legal, and employment history
  • Do not require the subject’s consent or even knowledge since they rely on public records
  • The person conducting the search or check does not need to state a reason
  • Information gained from the background check may not be used to stalk, harass, commit hate crimes or otherwise threaten

Although personal background checks can be done by reaching out to individual law enforcement agencies, jails, courts, county clerks, or via online search tools that host Spartanburg County public records, third-party services are skilled at conducting these searches efficiently and effectively and are very affordable. This can save searchers a great deal of time and tedious searching, and the third-party sites have access to records in other counties or states so they can offer broader search results.

Professional Background Checks

  • Disclose prior addresses, places of employment, arrests, charges, convictions, court records and even marital status and educational history
  • Necessitate written consent from the subject of the check
  • Allow the subject to report inaccuracies or dispute information within the check
  • Can be name-based searches (Level 1) or fingerprint-based searches verified by the FBI (Level 2)
  • Must abide by all state and federal laws including the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and those protected by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) which protect applicants, trainees and employees from discrimination and ensure accuracy and transparency in consumer information16, 17

Spartanburg County does not offer background checks at the local level, but both name-based and fingerprint-based background checks are available via the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).9

Level 1 name-based checks are available online or by mail and the process is detailed above in the section about state criminal records. Level 2 fingerprint-based checks are far more reliable as there is no potential for false matches when fingerprints are used for verification, but these comprehensive checks are only granted via authorized agencies if required by state statute.

SLED does not provide fingerprinting services, so individuals must either inquire with the agency requiring them to undergo the background check or visit an IdentoGO fingerprinting location, show valid identification, and pay the applicable fingerprinting fees (separate from the background check fee paid to SLED).

There are two IdentoGO locations in Spartanburg County. Appointments must be scheduled online in advance.
